With school out of session and July in full swing, the boardwalk was alive with summer.

In a weird way, even having grown up in California, it felt more west coast that east coast in his opinion. The number of bodies wandering in shorts and tank-tops or even dressed down to their swimwear was so quintessentially standard that for a second he could almost picture it being more from a television show than real life. But for as many people were wandering the boardwalk, the beach proper was almost bare but for a few wandering families.

It was crowded up on the strip, but the water looked quiet. Almost private, if not for a few kids squealing as they splashed in the shallows.

He'd packed a duffle bag. Towels, sunblock, and a few bags of chips. Nothing but the basics when they had shops and food carts barely out of sight. But if he was honest, nothing seemed like much of a necessity when the apartment was a bus ride away and he had Dee to distract him.

With whatever black magic she somehow managed to use on him that left him with itchy palms and the impulse to smile like an idiot.

"In a few days when I'm peeling, I get to blame it on you." He said pointedly, raising an eyebrow and then giving Dee a wry grin.

"So?" He asked, unsure of what difference that made.

"Doesn't make it any less true." Carson told her with a shrug. "I'm pretty sure we could wrap you in a tarp and put a bag over your head and you'd still have been ahead of them or any other girl in this place. Which honestly just makes this," he pointed between himself and her and raised an eyebrow. "All the more suspect. I'm still waiting to find out I've been punk'd."

It had been long enough since prom and that first nervous date that he was joking. Mostly.

Girl doesn't know the word but she can figure it out from context. She rolls her eyes behind her sunglasses.

"Just come down here and kiss me."

"Bossy," he complained with a grin. Twisting he shifted from sitting cross-legged to sprawling out on his belly alongside her, popping up on his elbows. "You're lucky I like you," he added dryly, flicking an errant curl away from her temple before bumping her shoulder with his and leaning to take a kiss.

"You love that I'm bossy," says Girl, leaning up to deepen the kiss just a little, her tits grazing against him. They've spent a lot of time together but they're still pretty limited to using their hands and, sometimes, she wants him inside her so badly that she feels like she's going to die waiting.

Carson hummed into the kiss and reached to cup the round of her shoulder. Public displays were still a little weird and new in his book, something he inherently associated with the stupid or depraved. But the warm press of Dee against him and her lips on his was more than a little difficult to resist, as sheepish as he sometimes felt over it.

He figured he was allowed to have a learning curve with it.

"I put up with it," he teased when they broke apart.

"Mmmhm." It's a soft, affirmative sound, made between pursed lips. She studies him for a moment, then, very deliberately, adjusts the strap of her bikini against her brown shoulder. "Whatever you say, Carson. But I'm going to remind you of that later."

"Is that a promise?" He asked cheekily, raising an eyebrow. Challengingly he studied her, eyes trailing over her critically before rising back to her face. After a beat he began to grin. "Or a threat? Because I can promise you that you're not the only one who can play games."

"Either way, you'll enjoy it, I promise." She grins at him, flashing straight right teeth. "But I'm pretty sure I can take you, baby."

Part of him wanted to be irritated at how perfect that smile was, but he couldn't quite muster up the sentiment. "Yeah?" He asked, smirking before lifting his shoulders in a flippant shrug. "Actually, yeah. You can probably kick my ass. I'm kinda concerned over how much that doesn't bother me." Leaning in he pressed a kiss to her cheekbone, and pulled back just far enough to smirk against her skin. "But don't think that I wouldn't be willing to dish it right back."

Dee turned her head, pressing another kiss against the corner of his mouth. She rolls one shoulder in a shrug, one dark eyebrow lifting slightly.

"Guess we'd just have to see who came out on top."

"If you're suggesting we roll around grappling each other, I might be more than okay with that." Carson said, pushing his hair back off of his forehead. Giving her a sideways glance, he bit down a grin that was threatening.

"Or I could just be a gentleman and let you come on top?" He asked cooly, probably a little too self satisfied with the open-handed double entendre. Sometimes it was difficult to resist when the opportunity was right there in front of him, crass or not.

"I bet you've given that some serious thought," says Girl, smirking up at him. Suddenly, she's really sorry that they're on a public beach. Her eyes dart down his body and back up again. "I might have. Maybe."

At her assessing look his ears felt hot, and he was fairly sure it wasn't just because of the sun beating down on them. Clearing his throat, Carson tried to shrug in a way that was dismissive, but the truth was he had given it serious thought. The added fact by her own admission she had been thinking about it too just made it feel more like a certainty. When he wasn't sure, but every day that passed the whole thing between them, the relationship, felt less uncertain and more solid.

It was as frightening as it was reassuring.

"Yeah?" He asked, sparing her bare skin a glance but then considering the rich gleam of her eyes instead. "In these thoughts you might have had, is it-- well, good?"

"Oh, yeah," says Girl, biting her lip over a smirk as she studies him. She wishes that they had some privacy so that she could put her hands on him while they talk, but she settles for brushing her fingers along his thigh. "I'm pretty sure we'll figure out how to make it really good for both of us, baby."

Of all the possible places to risk an erection, the beach was about as close to the bottom of his list as possible. Maybe not as low as say a doctor's office or a dog food factory, but still far enough down that he had to squirm and dampen any stirring feelings before it could get weird. He was half tempted to suggest they call off the entire beach charade to go have this conversation in detail, in private, but well... That would be a long awkward bus ride.

"I like to think so," he agreed, darting a look around to see if anyone was paying them any mind. With the coast clear he settled his palm on her back, first between the knobs of her shoulder blades, and then slid it down to tuck his fingers under the back band of her bikini top. "I mean. Yeah, I have some hopes and ideas that are pretty self centered, but... I like the idea of making it really good for you. And if you ever repeat this I will deny it, but also... special. I think we deserve special, right?"

She likes the way his hand feels on her, the weight of it, the way her back springs into sweat under the press of his palm. She lets her head drop a little, just enjoying being touched for a moment. It won't be her first time - she's pretty sure that Carson knows that. She doesn't think it matters.

"Yeah," she says, softly, surprised by how raw her voice suddenly is. "Yes, we deserve special."

Carson considered the rougher edge to her voice for a second, wondered if maybe he had said the wrong thing, but he didn't think so. He meant what he said. He wanted to go all the way, probably a lot more than he'd ever really thought he would. But with Dee things felt different, and when they got there, he didn't want it to only be because their hormones got the best of them. Maybe it wasn't love, and maybe the idea of love scared the shit out of him, but it should be more than just a quick frenzy of limbs and hormones.

"At the risk of sounding sappy," he added, petting the warm slick skin of her back. "The fact it'll be with you stands to promise it will be."

She blushes just a little at that, looking back over her shoulder to smile at him. His hand feels so good against her back it's difficult to keep a clear thought in her head while he's touching her.

"That did sound sappy," she says. It doesn't sound like she minds.

"Sorry," he apologized wryly. His tone alone, while maybe a touch embarrassed, clearly suggested he wasn't actually the slightest bit sorry. Leaning over he pressed his lips to the warmth of her shoulder, a smile curling against her skin.

"I'll try to keep the sappy grossness to a bare minimum," he teased. "Last thing we need is to be one of those couples."

"What if I like it?" She asks, glancing back over her shoulder at him, her eyebrows raised. She gives him a crooked smile. "Nobody ever wanted to say things like that to me before."

"To be honest, I never figured there would be anyone I'd want to say things like that to." He admitted, tilting his head and giving a slight shrug. Most days followed the same pattern that his entire life had laid out, where nearly every other human being he encountered was some kind of annoyance. But as hesitant as he still felt at times, it was easier to just relax and enjoy Dee's company rather than try to pick at her potential flaws.

Though he was still trying to figure out how to diplomatically broach the topic of school and education with her.

"But if you do like it, I guess I can make that work." He grinned, trailing his hand up from her back to cup the back of her neck before he stole another kiss.

A little shiver goes down Dee's spine and she bites her lip once he's done kissing her. She pushes up off the ground and offers Carson both of his hands. "C'mon. I want to go in the ocean. I never got the chance before." She tilts her head. "Can you swim?"

Between the kissing and sex talk, a dip in the ocean to cool down seemed like an excellent idea. Carson even suspected that it may have been her throwing him a bone as much as actually wanting to go for a swim and if that was the case, he was pretty sure she might actually be perfect.

"I can swim," he assured her, grabbing her outstretched hand and pulling himself up. Giving her palm a squeeze, he squinted out at the lazy lapping waves and began to tug his t-shirt up and off. "Clover might have been in the middle of buttfuck nowhere, but at least we had a public pool. As much as I hated knowing I was probably swimming around in other people's urine as a kid." Pausing, he dropping his short on the blanket and glanced at her. "Wait, can you?"

"I hadn't even ever taken a bath before I arrived here," says Girl, eyebrows raised as she watches him strip off. She grins, holding out her hand again once he's ready. "Water's pretty scarce, in the Zones. You're just going to have to make sure that I don't drown, okay?"

"We'll stick to the shallows." He promised her, grabbing her hand and tugging her towards the water. "You can just... I don't know, splash around and look alluring or something. Meanwhile I'll just look like a wet, harassed sun-burning rat. It'll be great."
